Purpose
The Obstetric Hemorrhage Initiative was developed to improve maternal safety and outcomes by reducing preventable maternal morbidity and mortality associated with obstetric hemorrhage. Obstetric hemorrhage remains one of the most serious threats to maternal health in Nebraska and across the United States and is a leading cause of maternal illness and death. Research indicates that 54% to 90% of hemorrhage-related maternal deaths are preventable. As a member of the Alliance for Innovation on Maternal Health (AIM), Nebraska is committed to implementing proven maternal safety and quality improvement approaches that support AIM’s national mission of eliminating preventable maternal mortality and severe maternal morbidity.
Initiative Goal
The goal of the Obstetric Hemorrhage Initiative is to improve patient outcomes during obstetric hemorrhage events by supporting Nebraska hospital teams in implementing the AIM Obstetric Hemorrhage Patient Safety Bundle and other evidence-based practices. Hospital teams are working to implement rigorous protocols to improve patient outcomes during obstetric hemorrhage events. This includes establishing dedicated hemorrhage carts, standardizing emergency protocols, and developing regular team training drills to ensure coordinated, rapid response. These efforts aim to improve the prevention, recognition, and treatment of obstetric hemorrhage, ultimately reducing preventable maternal morbidity and mortality and enhancing maternal safety across Nebraska.
